About The Muslim Michigander

The Story of Southeast Michigan is Our Story.

Southeast Michigan is home to one of the most vibrant, diverse, and historic Muslim communities in the Western hemisphere. From the coffee shops of Dearborn to the research labs of Ann Arbor, Muslim Michiganders are not just living here—we are shaping the future of this state.

Yet, despite our numbers and our impact, our stories are often told by others—or not told at all.

The Muslim Michigander was founded to change that.

We are an independent online newspaper dedicated to covering the news, issues, and people that define Muslim life in Southeast Michigan. We believe that our community deserves a publication that moves beyond surface-level stereotypes and "holiday coverage" to deliver rigorous, thoughtful reporting on the issues that actually affect our daily lives.

What We Cover

We are not a religious bulletin. We are a community newspaper. Our focus is on the intersection of civic life, culture, and policy in Southeast Michigan:

  • Civic Engagement: Comprehensive coverage of school board meetings, city council decisions, and local elections in Ann Arbor, Canton, Dearborn, and Detroit that impact Muslim residents.
  • Documenting Our Legacy: Southeast Michigan is the cradle of the American Muslim experience. From the first mosques built by auto workers in Highland Park to the historic preservation of our neighborhoods today, we are committed to archiving our history. We publish oral histories, revisit pivotal moments in our community's past, and ensure the contributions of the elders who built this community are never forgotten.
  • Community Profiles: Deep-dive interviews with the entrepreneurs, educators, doctors, and artists who are building our local economy and culture.
  • Policy & Civil Rights: Reporting on zoning laws, civil liberties, and public policy issues that matter to our neighborhoods.
  • Local Culture: The definitive guide to the Halal food scene, art exhibitions, and community events that bring us together.

Our Promise

Journalism is a trust. We promise to treat our readers and our subjects with fairness, accuracy, and respect. We are unapologetically focused on the Muslim experience, but our journalism is for everyone who cares about the future of Michigan.

Whether you have lived here for generations or just arrived, The Muslim Michigander is your source for the news that hits home.
