Why We Are Launching The Muslim Michigander

Welcome.

If you live in Southeast Michigan, you know that the Muslim story here is not a new one. It is woven into the fabric of the auto industry, the university systems, and the civic leadership of this state. From the historic mosques of Highland Park to the bustling avenues of Dearborn and the research labs of Ann Arbor, our community has been essential to Michigan’s identity for over a century.

But despite our deep roots, our stories are often told by outsiders, or worse, they are lost to time.

We founded The Muslim Michigander to fix this. We believe that a community as established as ours deserves more than just a bulletin board for prayer times. We deserve a newspaper.

What We Will Cover We are an independent media outlet focused on three core pillars:

  1. Civics & Policy: We will show up to the meetings you can’t attend. From school board debates on curriculum to city planning commissions in Ann Arbor and Canton, we report on the decisions that affect your taxes, your children, and your rights.
  2. Documenting Our Legacy: We are committed to preserving the oral histories and archival records of Muslims in the Great Lakes. We will tell the stories of the elders who built our institutions so that the next generation understands the shoulders they stand on.
  3. Culture & Life: We will cover the poets, chefs, and entrepreneurs who make Southeast Michigan a cultural destination.
